has been designed to share knowledge and advice from ACMstallholders through out New Zealand created by Artisan Craft Market Ltd. As a stallholder myself with over 25 years experience selling a range of handmade products, I wanted to share knowledge to help you get started on the journey of becoming a successful selling stallholder. Whether you are an experienced stallholder, or just starting out doing your first market stall, this information will show you some useful things to consider to help make your stall more profitable, selling more products and be successful.
PREPARATION PRACTISE
Have a plan for everything you need to bring & equipment needed to transport to pack & unpack your products easily. Practice your display set up prior in the required space you applied for. This also helps so you do not encroach on your neighbors space on the market day. Let the Organiser know prior if you may require more space.
PRESENTATION
An impressive stall layout needs to look interesting to draw customers in. Ease of viewing from the customers point of view is key. Make an impact using props to add different heights and levels to showcase your products. Personalise props to suit your products, making sure they are stable & secure. Use a floor-length tablecloth to hide boxes & equipment under your table, keeping your area clean.
PRICING
Use large clear easy to view pricing. Be flexible with payment options, provide cash & change, online banking, and/or an eftpos terminal. Print your bank account details onto smallbusiness-size pieces of paper to make it easy for your customer to pay if needed. Have a variety of lower to higher priced products. Offer discounted bundles & promotional offers for more sales.
PROMOTION
Make an impression promoting your business with banners, posters, fliers or business cards. You can create a QR code for your product that takes the buyer straight to your social media.Business cards need your business name, logo, contact details such as emails, links to your store, website, & social media sites. Be visible & active online, take photos and upload online on the day.Advertise and promote the events where you will be attending.
PERSONALITY
Look approachable, positive & happy, being friendly & welcoming. Engage customers with eye contact & say hello, smile enthusiastically. Be present & able to be seen. Try & stand most of the day to be at eye level with the customers.
PRIORITISE
Prioritise your time & travel, as it can take a lot longer arriving & setting up at markets in different venues. Be prompt, arriving in the expected set up period. Let organisers know if you are running late, or unable to attend.
PRODUCTS
Make sure customers know that your items are handmade. Engage with customers expressing your knowledge about your unique handcrafted products. You are the Creator, so be confident & proud of your products you create. Most Customers love a story or reason to stop and chat, tell them an interesting or unusual fact about your products. Have the right balance of products on display. Be prepared with a range of products offering a variety of styles, colours and sizes. If appropriate, offer to make a commission piece to suit the Customers needs.
planning
Its important to reflect whether the audience likely to attend is the right fit for your brand. This means they must be the right age, demographic, shared interests, and most importantly be willing to spend and buy your products.
PROFESSIONAL
A Logo is your brand identity & represents the business. Customers remember your business from branding so first impressions count. Create a simple logo that stands out, by choosing specific typography, simple colours & a strong visual element. Dress for success, and look presentable.
PACKAGING
Packaging is important to ensure customers have all of the information they need about the product.Practical packaging is needed for customers carry their purchase away. It could be branded or stamped paper bags, or even decorative gift boxes.Be sustainable & eco-friendly.
persevere
Have a regular presence, & try different markets to help find where your products are best suited for success. Believe in yourself and the products; reflect & make changes to be successful. Do not get disheartened if you don’t have success straight away. Commissions & Sales can happen after the event too. Continue to get to know other stallholders & establish new friendship connections.
